Welcome to the fifth installment of Good Neighbor Skills, a SERVE Village series highlighting practical ways neighbors can support one another.
This edition focuses on a core SERVE Village value: lending a helping hand.
Offering help, often quietly and without recognition, builds strong communities.
This spirit drives SERVE Week, Munch & Learns, Come Together Week, and everyday moments when neighbors prioritize care.
This season, we invite you to carry that spirit beyond our events and into your own neighborhoods.
Being a helping hand does not require a big plan or special tools. It begins with noticing, introducing yourself, asking how someone is doing, and offering support when needed.
Take a Moment to Be Intentional With Who Your Neighbors Are:
Who are the most direct neighbors around you? Take a moment to think about the neighbors who live closest to you. Are they beside you and across the street? Are they behind you?
Knowing is caring. Start being intentional about tracking key details about your neighbors. Create a simple map that tracks key information about your neighbors: parents' names, children's names, ages, pets, and their names.
Keep it casual. You aren’t trying to be a nosy neighbor, but want to be mindful of who your neighbors are and what is significant to them. That shows that you care.
Learn more about them. Add them to your list of birthdays, special anniversaries, and events. These may arise during casual conversation, but pay attention and take note. Being able to recall them will show that you are paying attention and care for your neighbors beyond just being in proximity.
Just for FUN! Celebrate Random Acts of Kindness Day on February 17th!
Acts of kindness may include shoveling a driveway, delivering a plate of cookies, or simply checking in. These small gestures have a real impact.
Try These Simple Ways to Lend a Helping Hand:
Introduce yourself to a neighbor you have not met yet.
Drop off baked goods or a warm meal as a thoughtful gesture.
Check in on an elderly neighbor.
Invite someone to join you for coffee, a walk, or a conversation on the front porch.
Often, the smallest acts of care build trust, belonging, and lasting connections. Begin with one small act of kindness, then continue with another.
At SERVE Village, we believe that when neighbors help one another, community becomes second nature.
Let us make this season one where generosity is present on every block.
